A Mumbled National Anthem

Americans, it seems, are a people obsessed with music. Every aspect of our culture seems to have been permeated by a song and dance number. One of our most popular television programs is American Idol (a show that we admittedly stole from the British), wherein lowly common folk strive to become the next big pop diva (or whatever the male equivalent of diva is).

Gossip magazines and websites seem to be permanently reporting on the news of what singer is doing this or musician doing that. Hell, roughly 60% of our movies now involve some plot combination of musical, Steup Up, and urban dance off. No surprises then that the breakout lines from MTVs The Jersey Shore were fist pump and fight the beat.

And yet, for all of that musical influence, our Mens National Team seems to revile singing above all else. Even Borat had the common sense to dress appropriately (even if he left his hat on during the performance). Just take a look at some of those faces when the National Anthem was played at the 2006 World Cup
